Just before the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953 I received a bulky package from my aunt who worked in a large shipping company in London. It contained a small album and a big bunch of used stamps from all over the world. I was eight years old – we lived home in Scotland then, and London seemed very far away!
Soon I had outgrown the first album, and 20 years later I had so many stamps that they filled three very large albums. I found stamps fascinating, each a tiny picture or design, and the world's geography and 20th century history opened themselves up to me in a very graphic way. My collection moved with me to America in 1960, and again to Denmark in 1972. By that time I was a graphic designer, and soon I had established my own studio and begun a family, and there was no time (or concentration) left for my stamp collection. (My mother, who lived in the States, still saved for many years all the stamps from her extensive correspondance.)
Just a few years ago, when I was about to move the collection for probably the 9th time, I tried to see if I could sell it. However I had not collected as a true philatelist does, systematically, and the collection was missing too many "key" pieces. I could not just throw it away, and no young person of my knowledge seemed to be interested in collecting at all. I wanted to start painting again, as I was soon to be retiring and would have more time, and suddenly the idea hit me – I could spread all these tiny pictures out in large pictures, so that they could be seen by people. Not hidden away as they had been for over 60 years!
I named the project "Collection". In choosing which stamps to use, I did not much concern myself with country of origin or subject matter, but focused mainly on colour and size. I deliberately did not censure any stamps, because they all represented their country's people and events, thereby describing about 70 years of world history!
